It sort of depends on where you live. We have a lot of woods behind our house and we bury our departed ratties back there. Those that don't have yards often have their rats cremated. And most vet offices will take care of everything for you for a fee. There was a poll we did on the home page about this subject so you might want to look at that and read the comments there. Just click on the "view past polls" link under the current poll on the home page on the right side.

I bury mine in our yard. We're not supposed to, but... well, they won't know. :P I'd love to get my babies cremated but the cheapest we've found to do it around here is $70, and I just can't afford that much for something that's not an emergency.

Christy is correct. Around here, we don't have a lot of space...add in that it's approaching winter time and the ground will be frozen.

Your local Humane Society might also be able to help you out with cremation.

I'de burry mine in my HUGE back yard like all our other pets. Even though I'm a little cautious now days, because one day out dog dug up my sister's guinea pig, and one day our dog came to the fromt door (to come in) with a frozen rodent head in her mouth. BLAH! lol. :)

I put my rats wherever they are most suited. Like Mushroom was by a tree stump with--duh--mushrooms sprouting, Cloud I was buried under the tree where the plums she loved so much grew, Raindrop was buried underneath the birdbath, etc.

Mine as well, under a weeping willow.

Mine are in my parents back yard, under a forsithia bush with stones over top of them. They're all in lockboxes, so nothing can disturb them. I have all the keys in a special place in a red velvet box.

Yes, mine are in boxes too. There are too many cats and foxes around here for them just to be buried in the ground. I think your idea of keeping the keys to the boxes is very sweet, Jess.
