Advice on how to tame a mouse.... |
|
ok, no matter what I try I can not manage to get my mice hand tame...I can hold them from the moment they are born (the mothers don't care) but as soon as they get old enough to move around they nip, and run and jump out of my hand....so when they get sick or hurt it is extremely difficult to get them and to get them to take their medication....like right now, I have a mouse who has some problems with her sight...he eyes ruptured and I have to put a cream on them but she won't hold still...so I can't get the cream on her eyes....Any advice would be appreciated.

Have a read of the "cant tame my mouse" post.
I think sometimes where it goes wrong with mice is as the mice become more friendly and curious and get onto your hand then people take their hand away, with the mouse on their hand, and the mouse gets a fright and wont go on your hand again.
I find if you can let the mice get on and off your hand, run up your arm ect as they want to then they dont associate it with a scary experience. Then after they are comfortable getting on and off your hand if you let them play on your lap or on a chair (I have a table set up with lots of toys) then they look forward to time out playing and are eager to jump on your hand and be picked up.
With the eye problem your mouse is having. This is just my experience, but everytime Ive tried to put any medications into the eye with mice its made it worse. Ive found oral antibiotics and me leaving the actual eye alone the best course of treatment. Ive found if you put anything into the eye they go nuts till they get it out which irritates the problem even more.
With antibiotic treatment I use either baytril syrup - half a drop twice a day (throw away half) hidden in a cookie soaked in soy milk or doxycycline in the water supply or doxyclycline paste smeared on the fur.
Good luck with your little ones....Monique

The thing that concerns me is the baby mice never crawl on to my hand in the first place...as soon as they start crawling around they won't go near my hand...it is like they don't like me...I have had only one mouse crawl onto my hand and that is harvey...he was attacked by his male cagemates and lost his ears...:'( I am having some much bad luck with mice....
Kerri, the mouse with the eye problem sadly passed away...

The babies are often reluctant to crawl onto your hand. They are usually very skitish and jumpy.
Have you tried smearing a treat - peanut butter or avocado - on your hand/arm. Yes its messy but they will soon jump onto your arm. Just leave your arm sitting there and let them get on and off as they please. Most of mine are in the large 110 litre storage boxes (I dont have cats, dogs or kids so the boxes work well and are easy to clean and move). When I put my arm in they see it as a means of escape and love to run up my arm.
Very sorry to hear about your mouse Kerri, every mouse Ive had with major eye problems has died too.
Keep trying with your little ones, they are great teachers of patience.
Monique
