An observation |

When I let my rats run around, they ignore me if I'm sitting up, but when I lie down on the floor I immediately become more interesting and start crawling all over me and grooming my hair.

I definitely agree! If I change position, they swarm all over me. I can't stand up without a gang of rats climbing their way up my legs and onto my shoulders all at once. And I can't lie down without my eyelashes, hair, ears, nose and anything else they can get to being groomed!

Maybe it's because they can't see well at all? When you're "up there", you're just a big amorphous blob, but when you're lying down, all your good parts (nostrils, ears, etc) come into view and they go for it.
