Post Charlie is a boy after all.
Some of you will remember that I said I was almost sure Charlie the mouse was female. Well I can now see that he definitely has the accoutrements of manhood :) He was so tiny when Ynnek brought him home that his manly assets were not visible.

I have discovered that Charlie is a wood mouse (otherwise known as a fieldmouse) rather than a house mouse and I'm quite glad that he has turned out to be male as the books tell me that, although the females tend to live in small groups, the males are solitary. Now I don't have to feel bad about him living alone. Though it's just as well I didn't get him a female companion, as I nearly did! I'm not sure, anyway, whether it would have been possible to keep a wood mouse with a domestic mouse, as I think domestic mice originated from housemice.

Anyway, Charlie seems very settled in his mouse palace. He won't let me pick him up or anything like that, but he has lost his fear enough that he will come out and look at me now, rather than running away and hiding if we walk into the room.

He has one hilarious habit. Whenever I fill his little food bowl, by the next morning he has carefully covered it with strips of paper bedding. I assume this must be to try and hide it so that nobody can steal it! :)

Linda, you are such a softie/sucker! I cannot get over that you kept this mouse!

My girly rats have always used their bedding to cover their food, except Euler when she lived with the boys. (Then I guess she picked up other influences.)

It's funny that you gave Charlie a boy's name even when you thought he was a girl. Something in you must have known. Kinda like how my mom wanted to call Bunn "Peter" even when we thought he was a girl. I'm glad you get to see Charlie now. I bet he has cute witto pink lips and ears, just like a rattie.

Sucker? Me?
Shocked Not me, I'm a hard-bitten lawyer
LOL

Here's a pic I took of Charlie while he was in the tank I put him in while I clean out his big tank. He is cute, with those huge melting black eyes.

How CUTE!!

I'm glad he's happy to be solitary. He must think he's King of Mouse Hill. :) But what are you gonna do now that he has his ... what did you call 'em ... assets? Won't he want nookie someday soon? Could you get him a blowup Minnie Mouse, maybe ....
