Crazy Binympho Mouse |
|
Hello,
I took a new mouse out of quarantine today and have a concern.
The new guy is a big healthy agouti and weighs 42g now. Around people he's friendly and calm. He is not very active and only rarely runs on his wheel.
We hooked him up in his new crib today, into an existing colony with three other males. He did the normal I'm gonna sniff your butt while all of you sniff mine thing for about fifteen minutes. Then he decides to start humping all the females. This act is quite amusing but all of the mice squeak and I don't think the rape victim likes it. Then he humps the males. Once he's gotten everyone he will wander around and get some poor mouse whose butt happens to be closest to his nose. This went on for half an hour, and I heard about one squeak-squeak-squeak per minute, until I put him by himself. Then I realized that some of the mice were bugged out so bad that they became defensive and squeaked whenever one of its cagemates brushed against them.
This is not restricted to the mouse cage. If they are on the toilet seat, my desk, bathroom floor, wherever, this little guy needs to get his groove on all the time.
I'm not going to keep him alone for his entire life but don't know what to do right now. Will this behaviour disappear once he gets used to his new cagemates? When they play outside their cages together, should the entire group come out or just a couple of them? Or should I just get him a rabbit?

What a problem. You were kidding about the rabbit, right? I hear they can be aggressive. I'm not even near being a mouse expert but do you think he's doing that to gain dominance or to have a party? I don't know if neutering would help...you didn't say if he was altered. Hope this helped.
