Digging Box Questions.... |
|
Sorry, No pictures!
Next time I give it to them I will take some!
BOY!!! Do they ever go wild in that thing...
You should have seen their hammock and the general mud
everywhere....OH MY GOSH and how do I ever clean off their tails?
ROFL!!!
What a pleasure to give them a treat like that!
I sifted through it the best I could before
putting the lid on to store it until next time.
They have had it for 4 days now....they really like to poop in it and bury their food. I know I got all the food out...but raisins...well...as many as I could find.
My question is...how many time can I use the digging box before
I have to replace the dirt?

When we set up our digging box....I decided not to use actual dirt.....ok, I didn't want my babies to get dirty... So we got some fun (and safe) litters and used that, a pvc tube and buried treats. Because we use litters that are not used in their litter boxes....they don't "go" in it.
We have our digging box in the play area and there's always somebody in there. They especially like to wrestle in there too.
I use a combination of either Alpha-dri (tiny pressed paper squares), the eco bedding (they LOVE that) and another wood product, that's ground very fine....(I can't remember the name off hand). That way, they never get dirty..
I'm sure my guys are very jealous of your's though

I'd say it really depends on the amount of dirt and how much they're pooping in it! Do they pee in it as well?
You could try sifting the dirt through a sieve to rescue the poops from it, if you had something with appropriate size holes that would let dirt through but not raisins.
Pee will make it so that you need to change it more often, and smaller lots will need changing more than bigger volumes. Do they mix it all up, or have they build tunnels in it? Do they poop all through it, or just in one place?

It is not big enough to dig tunnels...so they dig in it like dogs!
LOL! It is hilarious! I very much enjoyed watching them!
I cant tell if they pee'd in it or not...I will try to find a sifter.
The dirt is not expensive...but it is a ways from our home where I can buy it.

What type of dirt do you use, and what treats do you put in it? I would like to try that for my ratties!! Although, I just gave them a bath a few minutes ago, and I don't want them to get too dirty before next bathtime LOL.

littlerattie...
I bought some potting soil at WalMart.
It was the kind that had no additives.
I didn't actually put any treats in there for them,
they were dragging stuff in there on their own.
It was so much fun to watch....dirt was flying everywhere!
Here is a pic of their digging box.
