First time Litters- Advice needed! |
|
Hello! I have been rescuing rats for about four years now, and about 22 days ago, I met someone(not the person I was actually rescusing the rats from, a transporter) in Kentucky to pick up what I was told was 4 females. When I got there, I was shocked to see TWO females and TWO males in the cage together. I had only one cage, so I was forced to keep them together for the ride home. The problem is, they had already been together for 3 days, the trasporter said she didn't even noticed they weren't the same sex when I questioned her. Right when I got home I put the boys in with my other boys, and the girls with my girls... However I think the girls are pregant- and are indeed due any day by that matter. The beige hooded girl was already pretty big in size, but slinder, and now has a huge stomach and her sides seem larger too. The hairless girl was only about 3 months I would say, and she is sooo huge. I thought she would have them by now, but nothing. I have looked up much information about pregancy, since this will be my first litter, but I am worried something is wrong with them since they didn't have them yet. I have them both in different cages, one level and small space wires... I have a feeling the hairless girl will have hairless babies since one boy was american blue hooded hairless, the other boy was hairless and pink. I am getting people lined up to take them, but I guess my real question is: When should I expect to see the babies born, and is anything wrong since they did not have them yet, and the hairless is sooo big? Also, does anyone have and advice to give me about them? I am excited and scared about this!

I've not had any litters, but I did want to warn you that hairless females will sometimes have trouble producing milk. Make sure you have Kitten Replacement Milk on hand to help with feeding if necessary (every 2 hours I believe, make sure to use a warm towel to stimulate them to go to the bathroom after each feeding as well if something goes wrong and the mother isn't doing it). Also make sure you have a vet on call in case there is an emergency.
Since this forum is shutting down on Sunday you might also want to go to either www.goosemoose.com (who has a great rat forum) or www.ratsahoy.com (most of the ppl from here are moving there) to get more input.
Good luck with the new babies!
