I found something that might help smell a bit, is it safe? |
|
My mom said I could get ratties from Serendipity Rodentry's litters if she could walk into my room 5 out of 6 days and not be blown away by smell (she's very sensitive). So, to help she got me this stuff called "ammo litter urine odor absorber" It is made of resin and says that you put one cup in the cage and is safe if eaten. It also says, "Great for gerbils, hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits" Does this sound safe for my ratties?

Does it have citrus scent in it? Could you post the ingredients in it? I would be worried about putting on the bedding, unless there was absolutely nothing in it that could possibly harm rats.
What about washing the cage with it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't most resin come from pine?
Sorry, I'm just very suspicious of any "descenting cage additives." If you want a cage that doesn't stink, get powder-coated wire instead of galvanized on the cage, wipe it down daily, change the litter twice a week as opposed to once (with spot-collection of raisins everyday), change any cloth in the cage as soon as it smells, and every month, dismantle the cage, take it outside, hose it down, and scrub it well with a sponge.

Okay, you need to understand this, my cage is powder-coated and I do all that stuff every week and wipe the shelves every day. This is what I am talking about. I am going to find reviews now.

Does it show the ingredients anywhere?

It is just zeolite resin, which is not pine, it's a mineral. Someone on RR said I could use it. I am a bit happier, but it was annoying when everyone kept accusing me that I wasn't cleaning the cage enough, I do!

I understand about the smell! When I had carpet, the smell was terrible! The problem is when it is in the room, not the cage, and it sounds like that is your situation.
If it is just Zeolite resin, it should be allright. The link says that it is odorless, which should mean no citrus scent.
I would put it on the bottom of the cage, then add the litter, instead of dumping it on the litter though

I hear you on the smell, and I certainly didn't mean to accuse you of anything. As long as it's a mineral resin instead of pine, and it's unscented/odorless, it should be fine. I don't see anyone here who said you weren't cleaning the cage enough, but I'm only looking at this thread. Regardless, once a week is generally sufficient, but in cases of squirtus extremus, cleaning it more often than that is helpful.
