I've been considering getting a Martin's cage since my smaller rat has recently been able to squeeze through a larger opening in one of the bars. I know that you have to assemble them once they are shipped to you, but I was wondering how easy it is to dissasemble them if need be? I may need to occasionally travel with my rats and it would most likely be much easier for me to put them in a smaller cage for carrying and (if possible) pack up the Martin's cage into a more compact form.

As well, I was wondering what the actual difference between the galvanized steel and the powder-coated steel is and whether it's worth that extra investment.

I would, if you travel often, invest in a Martins, but use zip ties to assemble it. Makes it easy to take down if necessary and a good, sturdy travel cage for while in a vehicle (cat carriers work wonders!).

Definitely get the powder-coated. Not only is it more comfortable for your rats, but galvanized wire will pick up a stink after surprisingly little time.

One option (this is what I do) is to have the Martin's cage left at home, then have a dog crate (with the front screen covered in hardware cloth, if need be) that you use as a travel home. If you configure the crate right, it can hold them for a day or two, assuming they get time outside of it.

If I'm taking them to a different location for an extended period (as I'm doing for the first time in a couple of weeks when I fly to Florida and they live at my mom's house), I have a SuperPet Deluxe Critter Home (24.5"x12.5"x24.5") that serves as a comfortable vacation cage for my three girls.
