i know this will sound REALLY negative......but...... i was browsing rat &mice sites cause i am interested in mice and i found this article, a quote from it says
"Mice are vulnerable little animals and they need to be protected from predators and handled with care. It is particularly important to keep your other pets away from them - dogs, cats, rats, gerbils, hamsters and other pets can all easily maim or kill mice if they get hold of them, and may even savage them throught the bars of their cage.
Although there have been a few cases where mice have become best friends with other pets, there have been many more where attempts to introduce them have ended with a lot of pain or even death for the mouse. Even the gentlest rat or cat can suddenly turn on a mouse - this doesn't mean that the rat or cat is mean or nasty, just that its predatory instincts have reasserted themselves. This can happen at any time, without warning - even after the mouse and rat have been friends for months. People often share sweet stories about rats and mice which have lived happily together; they are less likely to talk about the cases which ended in tragedy.
Some of my mice were dragged through narrow cage bars by rats, and killed. Another mouse, which had been fostered onto a mother rat when its own mother was ill, lived happily with its adopted rat siblings for months, before they suddenly attacked and ate him. These were friendly, gentle rats - but instinct told them that mice were food."
Does this not worry you with Moo??
I would be careful if Moo has that much trust in them.
Sorry for people thinking this is wrong to post, i just wondered what you lot think ?
xx

Yes, it did worry me...at first. It has been now several months that Moo has been with the girls, and no incident. The cats, however, that wouldn't dare touch the rats, will try to swat at Moo (presumable because he is so much smaller than the rats). For this reason whenever Moo is out the cats are locked in another room.
When I first got Moo, I was not aware of the extreme danger that the rats would impose on him. He had a hamster cage to stay in, but I let him play with the girls during exercise time. He was already socialized to the rats and even spent a night sleeping in their cage when people here (well, more on other boards) started berating me for letting them be together. I did separate them, but Moo squeezed through the wire bars that on his hamster cage that night and INTO the rats' cage, where I found him sleeping the next morning, cuddled up with one of them. After that, I let him be. The girls love him. Some treat him like a kit (:ahem: Mousie) and the rest just treat him like another rat, grooming, playing, etc. There has never been an argument amongst them, and I have never been shown a reason to fear for his life. If that were so, he would not be there. I know people that have been around rats or mice for a long time immediately get set on the offensive when they hear about Moo, but all I can say is, there is an exception to every rule. Moo honestly enjoys the company he gets from the girls, sleeping with them, grooming them, and even attempting to run on the massive wheel with them (what a trip!). If I took him out, I would be more afraid for his quality of life, or his ability to be put with another mouse. What if I put him with another male mouse? These rats are girls, and therefore not a threat. He may attack and kill this new companion, as many male mice will, and then what I did to "save" Moo from being killed could result in the unnecessary death of another mouse. Or, worse yet, Moo wouldn't understand the pecking order among mice, and it would leave him susceptible to being killed by this new mouse.
I appreciate the care you show for the lives of animals. I mean honestly, if I didn't love the little ones so much I wouldn't be here in the first place. The fact that you posted this shows you are an educated pet owner. It just comes down to the fact that each instance is special in and of itself. Christy had a Rat terrier that would scoot around slowly as not to harm the rats, and it was in his bloodlines to attack and kill rats! It is up to each pet owner to be responsible enough to make sure their pets are safe and happy. For Moo, he is the happiest he could be with his girls, and they are happy with him. I will continue watch them carefully each and every day for even the smallest sign of upset.

Yup, and I still have him and he still scoots around as to not squash them, even though he's a grouchy old man now. I was given a lot of warnings and "how dare you's" on another forum about it, but if only other people could see for themselves how he is they would change their mind. I'm sure it is the same with Moo.
BTW, I have a mini license plate that I got out of a cereal box when I was about 8 years old that says MOO COW on it! It's still stuck to my bullitin board after all these years. I just might have to pass it on to you to attach to Moo's cage!

awww, cute! I'm sure Moo would love that We should do some sort of rattie winter gift-exchange list, where we can randomly be assigned another forum member's rat(s) to send a gift or two to! Anyone that wants to participate would be put in to receive a gift, and in return send a gift....you know how those things work at christmas parties, right? The lady I adopted Stripe from is sending him a gift this year Anywho, that's a long way off though.
Oh, and sorry to use the past tense, I'm happy to hear he's alive and scootin' still! :-D

Well if you don't mind sending me your addy by PM or email I'll send it to Moo and he can then have his own personalized license plate. Just don't let him read "The Mouse and The Motorcycle" or you'll be hooking him up in leather, boots and a helmet!

No prob. I try not to take things here too personally, as I know how quickly tempers can get raised over the proper care of animals. We all love them and care for them the same, so each and every opinion matters to me. I've found this board to be rather fair and sensitive with their comments, unlike other boards populated with members that will jump on someone for even the slightest transgression. That's the main reason I made RP my home, the people that make up this board are the best on the net!
