PolkaRoo: I LOVE polkaroo!! (Guess only the Canadians would understand.. )
|
Not just the Canadians !! I got Canadian tv stations while I was living near Detroit. Polkaroo was a cute lil bugger.
Here's an OT question for ya: Do you get alot of American coins floating around like we do w/ Canadian coins??
ok back on topic...
I had a list of a few tree/plant names to choose from before I got my girlies and then when I got them I decided which name belonged to whom. So I have Bonsai who is very energetic and playful (makes me think Bonzai!!). Then there's Willow, who is more laid back and independant. If I get more rats I think I will stick w/ the theme if I can come up w/ names that fit both the theme and thier personalities.
Oh and PS, Did I mention that I love the Goonies? hahaha truffle shuffle....

after running through name pairs( i got both my babies at the same time ans wanted two names that would go together)My whole family sat through dinner and the ride home after dinner trying to come up with a cute name pair. (Thing Siskel and Ebert, Thelma and Louise, etc.) I was hoping for something clever, and my boyfriend thought of Tara, which is "a rat" backwards. Then I thought of Star, which is "rats" backwards. I thought it was cute, and it stuck. If I hadn't chosen Tara and Star, it would have been Tira and Misu, but my boyfriend's dad thought of it too late.

Rattie names |
|
I named my first one Templeton after the rat in Charlotte's Web (the only rat I "knew")
My daughter suggested I name the second one Pettigrew after some character in the Harry potter books that can become a rat (Ithink, I've never red HP books)
I named Squiggy becuse she just reminded me of a Squiggy (Princess Diana's nickname.) She was very pretty, friendly and affectionate. Plus she wanted out of that cage!
Then came two adopted babies she to care of. I called them prince William and Prince Harry (what else) except that "Harry" turned out to be a girl, so I changed it to Harriet.
Next came two pet store rescues --Ratrat (a name he already answered to) and Lazarus -- bought Good Friday as the last two rats at the store (good as dead -- snake feeders) saved from death.
The others are all bought from Eric as examples of coat and color types.
Females -Chocolate -- Lady Godiva. Champagne or fawn rex -- Ferggie-- Champagne or fawn female -- Scarlett.
Males-- blue velvet -- Bluebeard. Black silver-- Jack Black (reputed to be the first person to sell rats as pets as well as catch them to be used in rat baiting.
Black verigated by Thane --- Macbeth, Thane of Cordor. Lambkin-- color pointed rex, called a lambkin by some fanciers.
Adopted black hooded female companion for Squiggy -- Sweetie or Sweet pea because she is so sweet.
So some got their names because of color and or coat. Some because of personality and some because of association with humans they reminded me of.

I love the name Trippetta.I got it out of a storie called Hop Frog by Edgar Allan Poe.It's my favorit storie that he wrote.Trippetta was a beutiful dwarf servant girl to a rude king and his seven wise men.She helps Hop Frog (a crazed, cripple, dwarf of a jest/fool) kill the king and wise men then run away back to where they came.

I wish I had some fabulous story about how I selected my ratties names....But alas I don't.
Almost all of my names were just custie names I thought would fit. I have kept a few names that Lynn already gave them before I got them from her. Like Kameo and Kai (hawaiian names for the chosen one and sea). Suzie was orginally names Peggy Sue (song title litter) and I renamed her Suzie Q (staying with the same theme).
Porter kept his name too. He and his brother Pilsner (now Polo) were named after beers, thanks to Lynn.
Venus was prenamed. And Lynn named our wonderful little Dexter. (story behind his name was that before we rescued him, he was tortured by an evil man that sprayed him with winDEX and tried to drown him).
Everyone else were just names I came up with.
I have always wanted to get 4 boys and name them Eddie, Alex, Michael and Sammy. Hubby blew my chance at that with the last 4 boys...he refused to let me rename HIS rattie Porter. .

A lot of my rats are or were named after music references:
Antony*, Beck*, Corgan*, Coyne*, Cuomo*, Doughty*, Fiona, Gavin*, Janine, Jonas*, Lucy, Langdon*, Lennon*, Madeleine, Marietta, Ruby Vroom, Yoshimi, and Yorke*
Several others are named after authors, playwrights or characters in books/plays/films/poems/TV shows:
Arwen, Basil, Beckett*, Estragon, Faust, Goldmund, Julian*, Lucas, Legolas*, Lovinia*, Poe*, Providence*, Puck*, Rosshalde, Tamora, Tolkien, Thunderclees* and Vladimir
Some rats came with their names:
Ben*, Bippo*, Catori (now Kitty), Colton, Catfood*, Dolly, Dash*, Ilori, Lucky*, Phineas, Tully and Talulah*
And some just fit them:
Adrian*, Caleb, Cooper, Calla*, Devi, Elliot, Freya, Geisha, Ira, Jasmine, Nigel, Noah, Owen*, Starling, Theo, Wren and Wyrick
I also just realized that 65 rats have shared their lives with me...all the ones about with an asterix (*) have passed on. I feel very, very honored to have loved and named so many ratties :*)

well let's see.... i actually have a baby name book that i use A LOT plus several web sites with gaelic names, plus a note book where i jot down random word/thoughts that would make neat names, plus a list of characters from books that i've read (it's a veeeeeeeeeeeeeery long list! )
raven and dove- named after birds, raven black, dove blue
opal- my pew girl.... it's seemed to fit, and the color was right!
faith- she picked me, and picked her name, also....
fern- my agouti girl, very earthy and sweet, then there's also the charlotte's web thing!
the boys started out on a "children's book" theme
templeton- duh
wodney- named after the children's book "hooway for wodney wat!"
charlie- charlie and the chocolate factory... one of my all time favorite books! i can't wait for the new movie to come out!!!! (johnny depp **swoon**)
linus- fit with charlie.... ya know... from charlie brown... some day i'll have a pigpen, too!
vale- david named him
zen- he picked his name... i ran through a ton of random names trying them out loud. i'd find one that i really liked, but it just didn't stick. he was sleeping in the crook of my neck one day, and zen just popped into my head, and staid!
then there are the boys we're getting from eric.... i went back to my gaelic theme for their names!
earcán- our new veriberk guy... means little speckled one (i wanted to use it for a merle great dane, but thought it would work well for him!)
cian- first time i saw his picture, i knew i had to have him! his name means ancient
tadhg- my very first rex! i'm so excited! his name means poet
liam- i've always loved loved loved the name! it means strong protector

For my rats most of them agreed to their names, sounds weird but its true...
My first two a PEW and an agouti hooded, it didn't take long for Pudge to get her name she was a rather large (yes -fat-) rat it took me nearly all the 5 days before she spawned for me to realise she was preggers.... I do believe she was -smirking- when I named her!
Zippo was more of a challenge, she just was -everywhere- she responds better to Zipper, but we affectionatly call her Zipperhead, Zipperbutt, The Mighty White One and Mighty Whitey....
Pudge birthed 9 baby ratties (wish I coulda kept em all, they were very cute and I do miss them) I ended up keeping 3, 2 agouti berks and a silvered fawn hooded... For Pudge, like Zippo, has the -other- names of Pudgers and Pudgewidgit... Sometimes refered to as The Skinny One
The boyfriend named his berk Shadow, simply cuz she loves playing in his shadow and all over his chair... I don't think she likes me very much, specially with the weekly check up I do...
My berk Precious I think -really- likes it when I watch Lord of the Rings.... Occasionally I am prone to hacking out "My Precious, My Love, My Own"... Her nicknames range from Precious Angel, to Buddah Belly, Bellysome, Fat Rat, Squealer and Quititsillyhead!
Nanners is a name everyone loves, her lovely fawny and white body, petite looks it took a long time before I found the "right" name.... I was actually staring at her trying to decide while eating some.... Banana cream pie pudding.... I know sounds strange but the name Nanners lept out, so we call her Nannerypoo, Nannas Baby and just plain Nannas and Nanners... Tho she deserves the name Nighteyes the Desecrator! Nanners is usually the one I will find who will -slowly- tear things up usually quite noisesome cardboard just when I'm about to drift off into dreamworld too.... My fault for giving them boot boxes!

Rats that are gone:
Gus- I always liked this name for a rat. We were told she was a boy but after I found out she was a girl I just called her Gussy and it fit very well.
Gizmo- He reminded me me of a gremlin.
Obidiah/Obi- My friend named him. It's a great rat name.
Zander- He named himself as soon as I first met him. I always called him Zander baby. I miss him. He had such a short life.
My current rats:
Mason- When he came to live with me he named himself, it just fit perfectly.
Serj- It's different and I like names that are different. The lead singer of my fiance's favorite band is names Serj so that's how we came up with it. If fits great though because he's so quick and loves speeding around.
Silus- He was the hardest to name. He didn't have a name for a long time. After a while I thougt Silus was good for him and I've liked that name for a long time.

I am a firm believer that the critters tell *you* their name... You know when you think of names, but none "fit", but suddenly you think of something and it fits perfectly, I like saying it's them telling you, and they smile and nod when at last you get it right! hehehehe!
My first rat was called Izzy from the rats of NIMH books
My second was called Ebony Eyes, or just Ebony. For obvious reasons (she was an agouti hooded)
My first boy was called Whiskas, because all I saw of him at the SPCA was his huge whiskers poking out the cage at me
Taz and Joey the brothers had been called Simon and Phill by their old owners, but they renamed themselves, I don't know why I named them that, I just did! (they told me! hehe)
Scamp told me his name in the pet shop before I'd even bought him. I was watching him do mad antics to sniff my finger, and kept calling him a wee scamp...
Possum reminded me so much of a possum, he still does.
Shade, I dunno, I was thinking of 'dark' things, because he's black, like shadow and dappled sunlight with his spots and stuff, and "shade" cropped up and I swear a bell went off or something, it fits him so well, and I have no idea why!!
Skie, same again, I don't know why I called her that, but every time I looked at her and thought of names, only "s" names came to me... she seemed to insist it started with "S"! hehehe! I thought of Sky, and it was so close. It sounded right but didn't look right... I dunno, but we settled on Skie, pronounced the same as Sky...

My first rat is name Ash(ee) because her fur is black and white..... and that makes grey, ash came to my mind
Next was Ben... because he was badddddddddddddddd!
Then Blue... well he is blue
Then one day out of the blue, I wanted some gold fish.... so my dad took me to the petstore and I looked at the rats.. There was a pretty fawn hooded one... I wanted to see it if was male or female, and the lady said no... she had the nerve to tell me I would drop it and cost 100's dollars worth of damage.. After a few minutes, the rat came over and it was a girl.. I took her home and on the way... I introduced myself.... An then I saw it.... it was a sign to name her... really.. Sassafrass St.. So now I have Sassy.
Jo-Jo was named because I was watching the end of Sargent Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band.... (Sings in head.. Get back..)
Last for now is my new baby... Head Spot.... Named because he is the first rat I have had with a hea sopt.. lol... I have more if you want me to continue...... just ask....

I'm with FD, my critters pretty much named themselves or 'agreed' to a name that fit....
My boy Gollum got named for a terrible sneeze unfortunatly but it just sounded right for him, he is also a squirm master when it comes to dispensing of the meds, ends up with more on his face than in his mouth...
My other boy Nazgul had been called Nicodemus... But it didn't 'fit' and I tried out a few but when I said to my boyfriend "I love how they did the Nazgul in the movies" the rat ran to the top of the boys domicile.... So Nazgul it is!
My girl Pudge got stuck with that name cuz she was so huge with eepers in her belly that I didn't know existed.... She's now the most skinny active rat, an avid wheel runner....
Zippo got that one for her zipping actions all over the big cage...
Shadow because thats where she hangs out, in her rat slaves shadow...
Nanners simply cuz she looks like a banana cream pie pudding cup....
Spaz never sits still unless shes sleeping or eating....
My last 3 got 'accidentally' named cuz I can sometimes do quite credible impressions....
Precious I did call her "My precious, my love, my own..." in a Gollum like voice one day, she loves it when I do this...
Poppet was called Pikachew by her previous owner, but I had her, Spaz and Savvy in the playpen for a bit everyone was hiding under the blanket and I lean over and just say "I know your 'ere Poppet" and she is the first one out from under the covers....
Savvy never answered to anything, guess she didn't like my choices... So I shot words at the cage at wierd intervals and she picked out Savvy when I was actually watching Pirates of the Caribbean....
Thats all my critters, but the last 3 amaze me.... I sometimes catch Spaz watching the moving objects on the TV... I'll asume she can see them, its the only other time I've caught her sitting still enough to snap a pic of.... I think she likes CSI...

I guess I have a weird way of naming my rats...usually I hold them, and completely clear my mind, until its just blank. Then I let thoughts slowly creep back in, and the first name thats there is usually the name I use. I feel like they know what they want to be called, they're just communicating it to me. Sometimes it happens instantly, the second I hold the rat I feel like the name is screaming in my head. Sometimes it comes more slowly, over a period of time. Sometimes the names are really silly, so I'm sure its just my subconcious throwing random things out.
I'm probably just weird and imagining it, but whatever. That method works well for me.
So for that reason I can't really say why I choose a name or the significance of it...you'll have to ask the rats that I suppose.
So, I've got: Oh Ratigan, Gruesome Grue, Grimace Skullface (Or, Grim the Executioner ) King Cupcake (Prince of Pastries,) Cyclus Cyclone, Muffin Man, Shaolin, Little Lottie, Eloin, Nelwyn, Cartha Catana, Lani Lazuli, and Cossette.

This is fun. It has been done before, but I love telling about names.
Rosie -- Husband named her. He gave no reason.
Boo -- Named after the little girl on Monster's Inc. Becase she needed a name.
Skooter and Smokie -- They were so close in looks that we wanted the names to relate to their speed and color (blaack).
Ben & Jerry -- At that point they were two of my three favorite men. I love my Ben.
Soozie -- She came to us as Sally but she didn't like that name and told me she wanted to be named Soozie.
Dexter and Galloway -- Named by Lynn at ROUS. They recognized those names so we kept them.

Zelda Princess Rat~ Princess Zelda on the "Zelda" video game.
Princess Leia ~ Princess Leia "Star Wars"
Piper Monkey~ searched for names online that might work. then had my fiancee pick. I came up with it because Piebald is the color of a white and black horse. and Piper is white and black. the monkey because she'd hang from the top of the aquarium when she was a littleun.
Lyric Bean~ again looking online for names I saw Lyric and it was perfect. Bean came along I dunno why cause it was something I said and it fit. kinda like Coffee Bean. lol
Emma~ plain and simple. When GraceJR showed me the adoption pics of Emma and her sisters. I looked at hers the FIRST thing that came to mind was "Emma" and i knew she was for me.

Dare: it started off as a joke. When I got her she was very skittish and would hide. Now that she's a little older she's the explorer of the group and will take on any situation!
Nerissa: it means sea nymph. It fits her perfectly because she's so tiny and blue
Kina: i've just always loved this name so it fit well with my favorite girl.
Cessi: also kind of a joke. When I was younger my friends and I would always says "oooh that's sessi [sexy]" and Cessi is a hairless...most people don't think she is very "sessi".
