New Cage finally built! - warning: lots of pics |
|
hi all!
My boyfriend and I came across this old bookshelf on freecycle a while ago.. and we had a great idea into turning it into a cage! Here is the finished product:
Dont' be alarmed at the hamster food on the bottom shelf, my friend's hamster died and she thought I could use it.. but I don't have any hamsters.. so it's being gifted on freecycle
Heres a pic of the cage with the doors open
Bottom cage, door closed
bottom cage, door open
inside bottom cage
top cage, door closed
top cage, door open!
Hope you guys like it! If there is anything you think we should change.. let me know! We made it so it's easily taken apart in case we have to move or something. Thanks!
Beckie
p.s We put gaurds up all over because my rats arn't litter trained yet and we thought it would be the best way to keep the litter in, instead of on the floor. Especially since my rats LOVE to kick bedding around!
We already know that they might start chewing on the gaurds.. so if they do, we already have a bunch of extras already cut and ready to be put in in case they need to be replaced. I wanted to buy a cage from martins cages.. but we don't have the money at all right now,so this was the next best thing to give my ratties a bigger home!

Really nice - I like the second floor in each of the cages - a bit like a ratty balcony! Bet the rats are having fun in their new home

I like it. How innovative... I'll have to do that. Will the wood stink up over time, or have you done something to guard them against it?
Oh and I love all the decorations on the door frames... Cute!

The wood appears to have that stuff that covers bookshelves and things- it's like bookcover kind of. I just made my girls a cage out of a similar cupboard, with the same brown lining, and it is so easy to clean! I just spot clean every feed time, wipe up any pee and poop, and do a big clean every week. It doesn't absorb pee so shouldn't get smelly. The ones I used to use where never coated in anything, and I realised that was why my boys were getting sick!(this was back when i really knew nothing about rats).
Good work- it looks great!!

I meant that the wardrobes I used to use for ratty cages were never coated with anything inside them, just bare wood. So they would absorb pee, and I never really took any notice of it, so the rats would get sick(respiratory probs) from living in a cage with pee walls. This was when I was younger and didn't really know anything about ratties or their care. Now they are in wire cages, with one cage being an old bookshelf with the inside covered in that plastic stuff so the wood can't absorb anything.
