Post PWRR's new cage
We just bought a great cage off of ebay from Desmond Pet Depot. My girls are crazy for it and it's absolutely huge! It's big enough that even with 3 hammocks, a wheel, 2 tubes, a large pigloo, several hanging toys ect.. it still seems a bit empty. Does anyone have any great ideas to spruce up the fun in a big cage???
Also, I have no idea how to add photo's to a post??? But there is a photo of it on my website, it's the last cage in the Housing section, here is the link:

XxPixieSworldxX....
I just got the same cage, only the smaller one.
It has not come in the mail yet....and I bet you that if you check your email from ebay...I sent you an email with a bunch of questions...
Now that I see your pic....are you worried about them falling from the top trying to get into the hammock located way at the top? How do they safely get into it? What did you end up getting your cage for $

Shocked OOOH!! Ive been eying those cages for WEEKS now!! Theyre absolutely gorgeous! BUT .. I have a serious issue with the guy who runs that place. He rips ppl off on shipping if you dont "buy it" outright! He tried to tell me that sending it would cost over $150, which is such balogna!

Did you buy it outright, or did u have to bid? How did you get around that god-awful shipping price? To me, with that cost, it didnt seem worth it Sad But I still REAAALLY want one of those cages!

Post RE: Re: PWRR
I just noticed that there arent many (if any?) tubes in it ... my rats seem to love tubes in all shapes and sizes. :) Is that an igloo on the bottom right? If so, great .. that was my next suggestion! Another great suggestion .. is getting yourself several pieces of big fat rope to hang in there ... you can make the rope go from one platform to the other .. or just straight up the side, or criss cross them, they seem to LOVE climbing on ropes Mr. Green

Ive also seen "digging boxes" for rats in some ppl's cages before, and rats seem to go WILD over those! One of them was a box of soft soil with some "rat-friendly grass" or some kind of rat friendly plants growing out, and the rats just loved it, it made them feel like they were in the wild or something, haha!! Also .. if you dont want the mess of dirt to clean up, you can make them a "digging box" out of a bunch of cut up pieces of felt or fleece, just throw that into a basket and VOILA! They seem to like to rumage through those Thumbs Up

My last ideas are: one of the ferret "treat balls" that release a treat every time they turn it? My rats like to play that game. They also like anything with a bell in it/on it, so I have a couple cat balls with bells in their cages. Ladders are great, too. And lastly, a hide-a-log for them to go in/on and chew.

Cant wait to see your palace when it's complete!!

Oh yeeeeah, heres a couple more ideas, though you may not want to put these items in the actual CAGE because if they're in the wrong type of dish, it could be very messy.

"Bobbing for peas/corn". I have a very heavy dish that can be clipped to the side of the cage for this, they love bobbing from their stuff!

And a "wading pool" I saw on "The Dapper Rat". Its a shallow pan/dish type thing with a bunch of rocks/stepping stones in it. Apparently the rats can climb in and get their feeties wet, and for extra excitement, you could throw some "bobbing" items in it like corn or peas. :) Some rats just dont like water, though, so this could be a winner or a loser.

frauleinAsh....thank you so much for all of those fun ideas.
I cant wait to get my cage...I will have room for some of those ideas.
I am not sure what XxPixieSworldxX got her cage for....for mine the final bid was $1.25 and the shipping
was $75 some odd cents....I almost backed out of getting it....I made the mistake of bidding before using the shipping calculator..oooops! After looking at the same size cage from Martins....it is still ALOT cheaper!!! Not only that it just looks way easier to clean....I cant wait to get it! It was shipped yesterday.

WOW... So many replies since yesterday! Crazy stuff LOL... I will try to get back to everything.
In total I spent $114.99 on the entire cage with shipping included. It was a buy it now price, the cage itself was 89.99 and the shipping was $35.00... It actually turned out to be a great deal for the size of the cage! I did notice though if you bid on his cages he does try to rip you off, Or rather, lure you in with a low bid but a huge shipping fee. As long as your not spending more that $115 on a cage no bigger than 56" tall your not getting ripped off. I really love this cage, and so do my girls! I was worried at first about the amount of levels and the cleaning (rats love to pee on wire cage levels wtf ) But the levels and ladders are easy to get through the doors of the cages because the doors are really wide. I have a cage that my 3 males are in that is only 36"tall with 3 levels and I paid $133 for it at Petco, so I felt like I did pretty good on the whole cage thing lol... Im even thinking of selling my other cages just so I can get more of this one. I think the reason it is so cheap though was because it comes COMPLETELY unassembled. I had some help putting it together but OMG there are these little white clasps that hold it together and you get a ton of them in case some break while putting them on (which they will) and they hurt your thumbs so bad after a while, but they are tight so the cage is very sturdy. Once you get it all put together it's an awesome cage... OH another thing I love is that the base is SOOOO deep, it's atleast 8 inches deep, so the girls aren't able to push any bedding out of the bottom at all and thats something they used to always do in their old cage, I would vaccuum and 5 minutes later there is a pile of aspen on the floor lol...

Thanks for all the great cage ideas. I don't think Im going to go with anything too messy like dirt or open water in the cage however, My girls often get dishes of frozen organic pea's and water to bob for, it's hillarious. I do think I am going to go with a large rope to swing from, I had the idea to hang it directly from the top middle portion of the cage so that it dangels all the way down to the bottom right through the middle with a knot here and there and maybe a fun bell or something at the bottom. My girls do seem to love the bird toys with bells and this solid pink cat ball toy with rocks in it, they carry it up to the top of the cage and throw it all the way down, OMG lol it gets loud but they are having fun! We do have 1 tube in the bottom of the cage, it's just big fat PVC piping the splits in to 3 ways, they go in and out of it but I was going to go rumage through the dumpster at a few carpet stores and get those huge carpet rolls and cut them in to sections and hang them througout the cage on hooks and stuff. And yes there is also the largest size Pigloo in there, they must have that lol they love it. My girl Daisy Mae is a hammock girl though, she used to sit inside a hammock that hung from my friends kitchen doorway for hours on end! She never wanted to come out lol...

So far I have not had any problems with my girls falling from the levels, I was worried about it at first because one of the girls in there is very old (4 years and 5 months) and has had a head tilt since I got her, sometimes she goes in to circle mode where she seems to be chasing her tail but she is SOOO good at climbing that cage, I often see her not even using the ladders and just going straight up the wall lol... She's really good at getting in to the hammocks as well, they use the wall of the cage to climb to them or do a monkey hang on the bottom of the levels to get in but they are all acsessable from the levels and ladders so they can climb right in, they like to do it the hard way i guess lol...

AND yes, ShadowWolf, that is my cage that you posted, how the heck do you get photo's on posts? lol Thank you though! :)

actually .. yeah, that *is* an excellent deal you got. I am just so ... STUBBORN. I dont like that guy for ripping ppl off on shipping, but I have a hunch that my stubborness will go away soon because of how badly I want those cages, haha! Plus, I searched the net for 5 hours and couldnt find them for sale anywhere else Sad

Dawn~ That actually isnt too bad if the cage sold for $1. I was just thinking that, if the bid went up to $30-40, it didnt seem worth it with the $150 shipping. I guess Ill just take a peek at what he's got Mr. Green

If you look at his Auctions + shipping charges....
then look at his Buy it Now + shipping....they are the same.
He worked it out that he gets the sme for the cages either way.
Oh ya....and he is a really nice guy....the first 2 times I talked with him I told him I was going to retract my bid due to the shipping charges and when he responded he was just so nice to me that I felt like an idiot.
We emailed a few times back and forth and I concluded that he is just really nice.

Dawn--it gets more embarassing. I saw a Martin's Cage on eBay that (I thought) was an R-695, and instantly bid $75 on it. Afterwards, I took a closer look, and noted that the ramps went all the way to the sides of the cage. Then I looked at the description, saw the dimensions, and realized that I had just bid $75 on an R-600HR--the evil cage of smallness! doh

Needless to say, I e-mailed the seller and plead with him to retract my bid, which he generously (if reluctantly, knowing that he'd never get that kind of bid on a 600HR again!) did. Still, I had plenty of egg on my face after that one.

Hey thats totally bizarre! Because when I emailed him to ask him why the shipping prices were so ridiculous, he just told me "for regular shipping prices, you can use the 'buy now' option." Offered no explanation as to why the prices were so high, but oh well. I *did* check the shipping for the "buy now", and it was significantly lower for the cage I viewed (which is the one pixie just bought up there) But, I think it pretty much evens out, either way you do it. You either pay more for the cage and less for shipping, or vice versa

He charges so much for shipping simply to ensure he makes as much as possible on the cage - it's obvious that cages can go for silly low prices on Ebay, and he's decided to charge extortionate amounts for "postage" to ensure that he gets the price he wants.

If the cages are good and worth the money, then go for it. But personally I'm a bit stubborn about people like that, price fixing and "steath charges" so I'd tell him to keep it. JMHO

Yeah but thats why theres a "reserve" on items. If the bid doesnt go over that reserve price, then it doesnt sell. I think he should just use the reserve or start the bid higher instead of ripping off on shipping, because some of the buyers dont check shipping prices because they trust that the seller wouldnt lie abt it, which is sad.

*sigh* I wish I knew what brand the cage was or where *he* bought them from so I could go over his head! wink

I have my issues with that seller's practices, but I am anxious to hear how the cage works out. I know one person who loves that seller's cages, and one who absolutely loathes them, so it'll be interesting to see where Pixie and Dawn fall in with that.

do you remember any of the reasons the "loather" didnt like that type of cage? I cant think of any reasons why it wouldnt be awesome in every way, its got all of the features I generally look for in a cage, and now Im very curious!

The main problems she had:

1. The bar spacing on the cage exterior is .75". This is small enough for bucks, but babies and most does can escape.
2. Because of the cage design, it's possible that a rat could fall from the top of the cage all the way to the bottom.
3. The pan at the bottom is fairly thin and has nothing in it to keep the rats from chewing their way out--which hers apparently did several times.
4. The seller bends you over and rapes you on shipping.

If I really like the cage and my rats do decide to chew the bottom...
I am going to have a custom made bottom done for it or I will find some type of bin
that the cage fits down into....

As far as the seller as a person goes, my experience with him was a good one. He was in contact me the whole time from the moment I Bought the item till the day I got it and always answered all my questions even though I was probly getting annoying lol... As for the bar spacings, i have an 8 week old hairless girl living in the cage now and she can't fit through the bars at all, They have smaller spacings on them that some of my other cages, about the same as the Chinchilla Coast cage's... So far I have still not had any problems with the cages, but again it was REALLY hard to put together! I haven't had anyone chew through the bottom yet buy my girls have tons of things to chew on and love the cage so I don't think they want to get out lol.. And no one has fallen yet, but many rat cages are very tall, so this one in particular is not going to make rats fall more often from high places lol...
The best part of this cage is the fact that its huge, cheap, and the base is really deep (no bedding can be pushed out) And I've had no trouble cleaning it.

Also, as far as i can remember there were no imprints on the base of the cage, but I will look to see if there is a brand name anywhere:) it's a simple enough design that he could be making these himself through his own company (Demsond)...
As for shipping I only paid $35 for shipping and $89 for the cage, so it was an awesome deal for it's size. I deffinately think that buying it now is a better idea though because bidding can get costly.

Now, I searched the net and they don't have their own website from what I can see..... This is the only REAL link I could find with small animal cages, if anyone else finds a good link to their stores page let me know :)
