Rat netsukes |
|
There are alot of netsukes (carved kimono decorations, usually ivory) out there depicting rats- rats on people's shoulders, rats in piles, rats rooting through bags of grain.
Here's one:

I've seen a lot of these advertised for sale on ebay, but usually less detailed than those.
If I ever bought one, it would have to be one of the ones carved from wood though - I shudder at the thought of buying anything made from ivory.

That's the very reason I don't have any that I've ever seen. They are gorgeous and I'd love to have them but refuse to buy anything made of ivory as well.

Although my family comes from the Seneca tribe , Turtle clan I have lots of friends who use/have other traditional charms ... including rats I've been given some very cool ones lately ... lucky me

I wouldn't buy ivory either but I was lucky enough to find two wooden ones at an antique show. One is a rat holding a nut and the other is of two rats wrestling.

Just so you know, too... many of these kinds of things are now being carved from cow bone harvested from the carcasses of our steaks and roasts, so it's kind of like recycling I guess. Moo.
