RATS+MICE IN SAME CAGE? |
|
This probally sounds like a stupid question but can rats and mice live together? Would they fight or anything?

huh.... i remember several times we've had this discussion. did you check the mice forum? not that it really matters, i mean you got your answer, it's just odd that you didn't come across it if you did a search. **shrug**

Yup, rats are predatory animals, something that many people don't consider given the fact that they're rodents. Being omnivorous, their dietary requirements are very similar to humans, so they will eat meat if given the chance. In the wild, rats commonly hunt, kill, and eat many small animals, mice included...a good rule of thumb is to regard your rats as a small cat...if you wouldn't allow something contact with a cat, you can assume its best not to allow it contact with a rat either.

I was told that if they were raised together as babies that they would grow up not knowing the difference. Maybe whoever told me got lucky raising their rats with mice.

There are of course exceptions to the rule but generally the rat will eat the mouse so it's not a risk I'd be willing to take.

At one point, I had a rat and my boyfriend had a gerbil. We let them see each other, my rat in my hands- his gerbil in his. We put them in smell/view of each other. The gerbil sat there, bored. My rat opened her mouth wide and just waited like she did for treats. She would have full intention of eating that gerbil, and she didnt think anything of it. It was kind o ffunny, in a bad way. Everyime we held them close together she'd open her mouth like she was waiting to get close enough to him to strike. We decided then and there..rats and rats only. The gerbs had to go, or be eaten. lol
