Ruud Cage |
|
I'm thinking of asking for a Ruud cage for my birthday. I wanted to know what everyone thinks of the Ruud. Is it too much of a hassle? Is there a ferret cage Martin's has that might be a better choice? I dunno. :\ Thanks!

I've got a ruud cage, it's great!
There are a few things to consider, however. It's very big (5 foot tall) and you should have a big enough shower, or an outside area to wash it.
Second, the more connecters you use , the sturdier the cage will be. Martin's recommend a connector every 3 inches or so, but I would use more then that, to make the cage more solid.
Third, it took me several hours to put it together. Use zip ties to hold it together temporarily because it's very easy to put it together backwards!
( trust me, I know!)
Fourth, it will make you get more rats and toys for them!

Bob, does it come apart as two cages still or just one huge cage? I think if there was the ability to leave it as two cages stacked that could be removed from each other for easy cleaning that would be a big benefit. However I don't know how sturdy it would be if not attached completely....

Bob has good comments--the only thing I'd add is to use zip ties only. If you ever need to disassemble it, zip ties are a *lot* easier to remove. You will have to replace zip ties every now and then, but not as often as you think.
Just thought of one other thing--make sure the balconies are snug against the walls. I know of one report where someone just used one or two ties on a full-length balcony, and that left enough of a gap where a rat's leg got pinched between the wall and the balcony--the rat's weight was enough to push a leg through the gap, and was also enough to keep the leg pinched between the wall and the balcony as he struggled to get out. I'll check, but I think I have zip ties between one and two inches apart on our cage with the full-width balcony.

Christy, it doesn't come apart, it's just four five foot panels that are clamped together that ( eventually) make one huge cage. I think that it's an r-695 and an r-685 on top of that that are clamped together at the factory, and shipped flat .

I just ordered the Ruud cage for the girls, they are going to have a ball in it! The only thing I'm worried about is it being too big! I'm only 5'1 and the cage is 5 feet, it might prove a bit difficult to move into the shower to clean. Good excuse to get Nayr to clean the cage more often!

I have one and I LOVE it. Someone mentioned on RR that you can now order it so that it will come apart. I'm not sure though. Ask the people at Martin's they are wonderful!!!!
I actually just drag mine out outside to wash it. I put the handle on one side and drag away. It scratches up the bottom a tiny bit but nothing bad. I would say the biggest thing is it's weight. Thank goodness it's only a second to lift it out of the pan.
I wouldn't bother either with a flip top. I can't see any use of it. Everything so far has fit through the doors and I'm not even 5'3" so a flip top would be useless for me.

I was thinking about how I could make the top of my Martins (R690) a flip top, but I just dont see how it could be done
