Post Stone tile in cage?
Someone on this list mentioned using a stone tile in the cage to help keep ratties' nails shorter (to avoid having to clip them). But when I went looking at Home Depot for something suitable I couldn't find anything that seemed very rough. Most of the tiles were really quite smooth, or very heavy (I'm hoping to use one on the second floor, as that is where the rats spend the bulk of their time). What are others doing to help wear down those nails?

We tried using a cinder block in the cage to wear down the nails, but all we got was a urine soaked cinder block and the rats still had long nails. Rolling Eyes

I'm using a good-old fashioned building brick in my guinea pig cage, and that seems to be helping somewhat. I put it under the water bottle so he has to stand on it in order to drink. . .and to help him reach it.

I use stone tiles from Home Depot - not the ceramic ones like for a bathroom, but the 12" x 12" ones. They're not very rough, but they do the job. I suppose you could turn them over (top side down) since underneath seems to be rougher.

Great -- thanks for the ideas. Afraid I'll be a nervous wreck if I have to trim rattie nails.

I tried a brick with the Haggis Rats - they seemed to think it was part of a rattie obstacle course and jumped over it.
