RE: Suitable Cage? |
|
I'd say whether or not that cage is appropriate depends on your boys. The bars don't have crosswires for long spaces in between, so climbing on the bars would be difficult. My girls could never go in a cage like that, but my boys are less "climbey" and probably could.
Besides that, I'd worry about what's on the bars. Are they just painted, or are they powder-coated? Powder-coating is pretty essential more most people (unless you have a fabulous cleaning recipe or really good luck) because urine will soak into uncoated wires (which painted wires would be, as soon as your boys started removing the paint/it chipped off.
I guess my final concern would be supporting Petco, but perhaps that's just me . I mostly try to give my rattie money to places that don't support the sale of their pets as food for other pets and keep their animals in good conditions within the store. I've never seen a Petco that accomplished the latter, and none of them achieve the former.

I think the size in general might be appropriate for two boys. But for the price, you might find something larger, more cost effective and "funner" for your boys here:
www.martinscages.com
or here:
www.qualitycage.com
I have cages from both companies and they are great. Pros and cons from both. You might want to take a gander at the pics in the Cage Gallery too. Lots of pics there (some of my Quality and Martin's cages are there too). Personally, I favor the Quality cages, but they are a little more expensive. Their website is just a bit harder to find the right cages....we have the expandable ferret cage and the prairie dog cage.

Also, be sure to check out the sticky threads in the Cages & Abodes forum - there's lots of information on flooring issues.

Jill, my rats (3 girls and a boy) have a cage with wire like that (it is powder coated though). They have no problem climbing it, but I guess it depends on the rat.
Size wise that cage looks all right, but I am sure that there are other cages, that are bigger, for that price. Maybe make your own? My cage is home made, and it costed around $100, but is huge (27"x27"x54")

You can get an R-695, which will hold 5 rats, for about the same price with shipping. Or you could make one, as I plan to do for an extension.

Thank you for your replies. I will check into other cages and see what I can find. I thought about making one but I'm not handy at all with that kind of stuff!
