Travel Cage for 2-3 Rats |
|
I'm thinking of getting a carrying cage for my rats since I usually travel between two locations by different means of transport and I have cages at both places, but I'd rather not carry something large. I've got two rats now and I'm considering getting a third, and I've looked at a bunch of different cages but none have seemed quite appropriate. I'm looking for something relatively small, very solid and easily transportable (maybe self-evident?). Something enclosed as well would be nice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

For a transporter, I just use a $13 Bargain Hound small dog carrier from Petsmart, outfitted with a wooden house inside and food and water dispensers. Granted, I never take them more than 45 minutes away before putting them in the travel cage, but the carrier works just fine for how I use it.

For transporting rats to and from shows, and from pick up to home, we use plastic picnic baskets! They have small holes in the lid and sides, so are airy, yet are private for ratty. They are only $9.95 each in discount stores, which is way less than travel cages!

Depending on how large your rats are, a cat basket can work as well (as long as they can't squeeze through the gaps). I have two - one is wire mesh and the whole top opens, the other is plastic with solid sides and a plastic grid at the front which opens, and the entire thing separates into two parts for easy cleaning. They work fine, and have been used for 5 hour transportations. The ones they sold in my local pet store for rat travel cages are too small for even a pair of rats for any length of time. Cat baskets work a treat.
My flatmate uses a hamster cage - it's small enough to easily transport, but large enough for a few rats.
