Yay!! I have just arrived back in Wales to discover that my star of a little lady has delivered 9 or 10 delightful pink bundles into the world.. I can already see pigment too!! They're so beautiful!! They all look healthy and good, but I will investigate some more tomorrow when Hero has re-established her ground with me.. I don't want to rush things seeing as I've been away.. Just a wonder tho.. How likely is she to eat them?!

Next question.. I have some lactol for her to keep her up.. how much should I give her.. as in how much per 100ml of water..? And how much and how often? I'm also giving her ferretvite with her normal food..

Wooooo i'm a grandma!!hahaha! they're so lovely.. I'll post picks when I'm a bit more acquainted.. Any advice on how soon to handle etc? I'm desperate not to have her eat them!!

rats really don't eat their young...I think that's more or a hamster thing. I wouldn't worry about handling them causing any problems unless she's new and not used to you. When I had my one (and only) litter I handled them on the very first day with no ill effects. I'm sure a breeder could tell you a lot more..but I really wouldn't worry about her eating them

Yay! Congrats to you and mom. I've had 2 rattie girls of mine give birth just recently, and I've handled both litters since the beginning. I think you should be fine. Post pictures soon!

With my one n only experience at grandmotherhood....smile

there was no eating of young.

we were handling the young from day 2 but only when mummy rat was away from the young....keep her occupied with food while you handle them

rub your hands in their bedding prior to handling so the scent is on your hands

from about day 5 onwards we were handling mum and babies together

we had absolutely no problems at all

mum watched as we handled them and we let her see them at all times so she didnt worry

she was a very good mum....smile

you shouldnt have any trouble

just enjoy them

ok.. this is weird.. it's the only one i can get to resize to a smaller size.. so here they are, my little babies!! i'll post more shortly when i get them to resize!

Hi,
I do not see any pics of your girl here??? From what little I can see of the babies it looks like they are hoodeds. A thin stripe(blaze) on the face can be both dominate and recessive blazing- depending on what is the background of the rats involved. A thin stripe is *usually* associated with a recessive dalmation/varigated makrings and is thus is safer from MC. However, mixing this kind of marking with another who was HW (and not of dalmation/rec. blazing) will give you the chance for MC. Do you know the background on the mother and father? I hope this helps you a little as it can all be pretty confusing. When you throw in unknowns then it becomes really hard to know anything for sure.

I dont think the UK has the mega colon problems that we do here in the US...Heck their rats over there hardly have any of hte health issues that our rats here do. Shaz

Shaz is right - in the UK, we don't have the high white husky/dominant white spotting and megacolon problems as found in the US. UK huskies are a completely different gene, and none of our blazed rats (unless they're descended from US husky lines) are going to have an increased risk of megacolon. That doesn't mean it never happens - because it does. Not all megacolon cases are associated with high whites and not all high whites have megacolon. But in the UK we don't have greatly increased megacolon risks associated with markings as you do in the US.

OMG you have some of the prettiest hoodies and mismarked hoodies...and that lil one with the head spot, its so much lighter then the rest...maybe a mink? You dont have blue in the UK do you? Other wise I was thinking blue...I want more pics of that one...heck individual pics of all of them would be awesome!!!! I bet lil willow is going to snatch up some of your babies...lol Shaz

Not sure bout blues to be honest.. I don't know much about the varieties and standards. I think I have a part russian blue in Scamps.. as he's not quite beige or agouti, and the only description I could find to match him was russian blue.. but as he's a pet store one, have no idea of his genetics. My two *evil* rats, bless them, are probably my purest, I have a pink eyed champagne self and a mink or chocolate self.. But like I said, they're unhandle-able most of the time, so I've never really had a chance to get a good look.

And yes, he is very pale, it's only started to show over the last couple of days where all their hair is coming through.. And they're getting all fat!! I think when I have my degree, and a few more years experience, I'll put some time into a rescue organisation.. I don't think you can have too many rats!! Mr. Green

My mum wants two of these, but I'm trying to con her into having males as I'm in the middle of making a huge cage to make up for my influx of babies!! And really I want it for the females as the males already have a huge cage!! When it's done it should be a palace.. I'm looking forward to seeing them in it!! Oh if only I could put all my time into rats and didnt have to work!! Haha!!

it looks to me like you sexed it right...how about more indiviual pics top sides? I am really curious about the lighter colored one.....man I have to swim an ocean. I think it looks blue, the rest are deffiantly blacks. Shaz

Shaz we most definitely DO have blue here, and russian blue - in actual fact what you guys in the US call the G locus is the same locus that in scientific and UK notation is called the D locus. The Russian blue locus over here is given the notation Rb as opposed to in the US where it has been given the notation of D (for some reason!). Extra confusions.
