My dear little PEW girl Vera passed away yesterday. She and her mother have lived with me since June of 2004 (I got them as rescues). They've never particularly liked being held, but took great joy in having a huge house with lots of hidey houses and all the banana pudding they could want. Vera was never particularly fond of me and even nipped a couple times, but she was a charming active little girl and I respected her need to be mostly left alone. She was healthy up until yesterday morning, and I suspect she had a stroke. Molly (her mom) doted on her until right before she passed, and she let me really hold her for the first time as was going.

These were not my first mice, but my others came from very poor petshop stock as rehomes. Molly and Vera are the first mice I've really had a chance to bond with. Without them, I never would have adopted my sweet new little boys Will and James. Molly is quite upset, and I don't suspect that she'll be with me much longer either, sadly. I would get two little girls to keep her company, but I don't think she'll still be around long enough for me track them down and do proper quarantine.

Dream in peace miss Veramouse, I love you. Keep watch over your mom and help her along when she needs it.

I hadn't thought of that, but my Owen had one when he was a baby. I'll go fetch her one first thing in the morning.
