Post Very, very itchy mouse
Help! The little rescued mouse I have has intense itchies, so much so that she's scratched her fur off in spots, her skin in spots, and even her ears have bloody spots from scratching, and one ear is torn. I took her in to work and did a skin swab, and an ear swab, and I tried to do a skin scraping (nothing came off) and looked at the stuff under a microscope. I had a vet's reference book of parasites handy, including mites, but the slide showed nothing. Suspecting her diet, I already changed her from a rattie's "variety" diet to a standard mouse mixture, and that did nothing to help. She only uses a paper bag, some paper towels, and a little Yesterday's News for bedding- pretty inert stuff. She has begun to look awful. I figure a trip to my vet's is in order, but I thought I'd ask if anybody here might have some advice. Also, for days I had been putting antibiotic cream on her sores, and they healed up mostly, but she's still so very itchy. Help!

Ive had alot of mice like that. Its always ones housed alone. Same thing, cant find any evidence of mites. Once they start scratching they just cant stop! I usually put them on a course of oral antibiotics, Baytril usually and treat with Ivermectin as well just in case. Personally, Ive always thought it was more of a neurotic stressed behaviour problem then a lice problem. With a female I would try a cage mate as well as antibiotics & Ivermectin for both. Ive also tried every diet change there is and its never made any difference. Let me know how you go. Good Luck. Monique
