Water bottle sizes |
|
Can mice drink out of rat sized water bottles? I recently moved my mice into a tank, and their little water bottle doesn't work with the tank, so I got a big water bottle. For the first few days I saw them drink, and the bubbles came up so I thought they were drinking. Now I'm not really sure though. I haven't seen them drinking today. They look fine, but I don't think the water level is going down. Of course, it's hard to tell with so much water in there.
So, can they really drink out of the bigger ones? Also, can I fill it up only a bit? The bottle says to always fill it up all the way, but I don't want to be wasting so much water since I change it every two days, that's a lot of water down the drain

Yes, mice can use the larger water bottles just fine. They just do not drink nearly the amount a rat would, so you just don't notice it as much.
I clean out my water bottles every other day - and usually the mouse bottles are more than half full when I do so. My rat water bottles are usually nearly empty by then.
If you prefer, you could always switch them back to the smaller bottles.

I would rather use the little bottles, it's just that I couldn't figure out how to hook the little one in. I couldn't find little bottles that went in tanks. I wish I could take a pic, I'm not good explaining things, but the bigger bottle is one that hangs from the top, the little one I have is one that hooked onto the wires to hold on. Are there little ones that hang also?

You could always try making a hook yourself. I used to do this when I used tanks, I just wrapped a bit of thin wire around the bottle, and left a long piece so I could hook it over the rim of the tank, or hang it from the lid. To make it safer UI just wrapped thick tape around the wire so it wasn't spiky

That's a good idea, thanks. I'll have to see if I can rig one up
