Shocked

I've learnt to keep your mouth closed when your boys walk over your face, just in case they decide to "show their love" by piddling on you. Yuck
I've learnt that even when you are wearing them, rats can turn your clothes into lace without you even noticing.
I've learnt that no matter how many times you vacuum, you always miss one rat raisin that has been hurled out of the cage.
I've learnt that no matter how much you think you know about rats, there's always more to learn. wink

I've learned that while you may start out "just getting two", you will wind up with a severe case of GGMR, and wind up with 6-8.

Definately! Most of the holes in my cloths are from when I was wearing them. Ellie will sit inocently under a blanket, chewing away Rolling Eyes

I've learned not to wear my boyfriend's hoodies when I have them out with me, for the above stated reasons.

No matter how much you like your clothing just the way it is. They think they are clothing designers and try to add little touches hear and there.

I've learned that you can cheerfully spend over $1000 in vet care for a rat who came to you as a free rescue or a $2 pet store bargain and you don't even mind.

I've learned that rats appreciate everything you do for them.. even nasty/painful stuff like cleaning out abscesses. I've also found that even a nervous and fearful rescue rat will lay still in your arms as you tend to his wound/abscess.

I've learned that the responsibility of caring for these loving little creatures can keep you going despite depression, pain, illness, and even suicidal ideation.. yes, when I was 19, a rat saved my life. I had to keep going on for her, so I stuck around.

I've learned that even if you put the rat cage 6 inches away from the fabric side of the chair, somehow you will still find at least one large hole chewed into the side of the chair. And despite the fact that the fabric the chair is covered in hasn't been made since the 70's and there's no way of ever getting it repaired in the same fabric, you don't really care.

I've found that 2 rats shortly becomes 30+ when you open your heart and home to rescues.

I've discovered that you'll drive 30 Kilometers in a blinding snowstorm that already caused you to call in to work to say you can't make it in for your shift due to the severe weather in order to get a sick rat to the emergency on-call vet two towns over... and you'll even tolerate the emergency vet's rude and dismissive attitude (despite having a real hate about taking that type of behavior without fighting back) just to get your ratty feeling better (though that doesn't stop you from reporting the vet to the others in his practice for his unprofessionalism come Monday).

I've learned that you will allow a partly paralysed and totally incontinent rat to sleep in your bed with you (granted, sleeping on a diaper laid on your chest).

I've discovered that you'll let your rat do almost anything to you... grooming your hair, nibbling your hangnails off, picking your teeth, licking your lips and tongue, tickling you with whiskers, and running down your shirt. Stuff you never used to think you'd let an animal do in a trillion years!

I've found that very soon after getting rats, any moment spent without one around feels wasted and empty and wrong and I'll find a way to bring rats out with me as much as possible by using a bulky coat and a 'ratbag' that can be worn beneath it.

I have observed that rats have better manners than 99% of the humans I see and quickly came to prefer spending my time with them than my own species.

I discovered, much to my amusement, that rats have a surprisingly sophisticated sense of humour and the hilarious ability to really 'take the mickey' out of their human.

I've learned to laugh, even when you can't afford to replace what they just chewed up in five seconds flat.

I have learned that no matter how high you make tray guards or seed guards, more litter will end up on the floor than that is in the cage LOL

Ive learned that you have to glance at your rat every once and a while while they are on your lap so they wont turn your jeans into rags.
Ive learned that new rats quickly adapt the "zoom-down-the-side-of-the-cage-and-play-hide-and seek-with-mommy" ability.
Ive learned to never try to resist the cute inocent begging face when a rattie wants something.
Ive learned that you need at least 10 back up hammocks when first getting a rattie.
Ive learned that incredible cuteness isnt the only one of rats many super powers.
Ive learned to watch for flying rats when cleaning the cage.
Ive learned that ratlets can play keap-away for hours.
Ive learned that a rats tail can be a balance beam,a rope, and a very good utencil used for sticking up ones nose and mouth.
Ive learned that rats have an amazing sense of balance and would be a very good circus tight-rope-walker.
Ive learned to never wear wool-like pants when ratties are free ranging.
Ive learned that shirt diving, tight rope walking, leg shimming, and food snatching should be in the Rat Olympics.

And last but not least, Ive learned that rats are incredible teachers. Mr. Green
