Post Wild mice - what do you do?
As some of you may remember a few months ago I had trouble with a snake on my front porch and was worried about it getting into the house. Now I have found mouse droppings under the house in the garage and I still see evidence of a snake in the yard as well.

Has anyone here had field mice in their home? I worry about disease and the snake being attracted to the house. I have a humane trap but I havent set it because if I catch any mice what do I do with them? Any thoughts?

I occasionally see wood mice in my garden (they are attracted by the seed on the bird table) but I haven't, to my knowledge, had them in the house, except for Charlie, the resident. I just leave them be, but I don't have to worry about snakes!
If you caught it/them in a humane trap, are their any woods/fields nearby where they could be released safely? That was what we'd originally intended doing with Charlie once he recovered from his near drowning, but Ynnek couldn't face the idea of him being eaten by something after he had gone to such lengths to save him.

I meant to ask - is there any food or anything in the garage that would attract the mice? A few years ago we had a family of house mice in the garage. They moved in because we used to store the sacks of dry dog food in there. Once we moved the food, the mice moved out and we haven't seen mice in there since.

I agree with linda...If you catch it, then it should be released away from the house...but I would look around after catching it because it may have a litter around somewhere...

I've always had mice in my house. I know that might sound "gross" but we only see them every so often, but I know they're there. At one point I'd fed them and given them some cloth in the winter, lol. The cats will catch them occasionally, but other than that, you don't typically see them, and they normally don't bother us, don't get into the food or anything.

I have snakes around here, too, and I've never had a problem with one getting into the house. When we catch mice normally we put them across the street in the park, but personally I don't think your gonna get rid of them unless they just moved in without killing them. Depends on how big your house is, where they originally came from, and how long they've been there. I think they prefer houses, not only for food (which the ones here must go outside or sneak cat food to eat, cause there's nothing else they CAN eat in my house) but for safety and warmth...

Good luck though.

If you catch a mouse (wild) just remeber this, a wild mouse has an "ownership radius" of 1-2 miles. So if you release him, make sure that it's someplace he will not know, or is far enough away that he won't be able to get back.

For two winters so far I have caught over 30 mice, so remember if you catch them humanely to let them go far enough away from the house to not come back.

I caught a wild mouse about 3 weeks ago and tried to keep him but he was unhappy and didn't want to be caged so I ended taking him out to a large field that had wheat, cotton, other plants, a small pond and shelter. I'm pretty sure he'll live a much happier life that way. So my advice is if you catch one just take it to a field and set it free.
