Would this cage be alright? |
|
I'm rather new and my rat is in a 20 gallon aquarium. I don't like it
Would this one be alright for her and I guess up to two others?

It's at a GREAT price, but I think it might be too small?

That cage is entirely too small.

If you want to go with Coast Cages, they make one that's about two and a half feet tall or so, and has 3 levels. It's the biggest one they build, and is available at most Petco stores. That's the only Coast Cage I'd put a rat in permanently, and if you want to add two more, you might be better off looking at something the size of the Martin's R-685/690.

The coast cage that bcorby is talking abt holds 3 rats, it's the exact same cage as the one you posted, except its GIANT. I actually was suprised to find out that it would only hold 3 rats, because it looks like it could hold at least 5, but aaah well. Its sorta expensive, if you consider that you can get a cage that holds abt 7 rats for the same price. Choice is up to you, though. Chances are ... if you're new to this sort of thing, you will probably be surprised at how few rats will fit into the cages you pick out, lol. They really need a lot of space! Im sure any of us could point you in the right direction if you want some suggestions. Martin's cages are great, but theyre sorta expensive. If money isnt an object, get them, theyre great cages that have lots of good features available and they last a long time. There are several threads here on Martin's cages and the features that you should get them with.
If you're looking for a cheaper way for a big cage, a lot of people like the Desmond Pet Depot cages, he is a seller on ebay. He is a kind of unethical guy in that he charges anywhere from 5-10 times the normal price of shipping if you're *betting* on the cages, but if you buy them outright, he doesnt overcharge *too* badly. Most ppl arent bothered by this though because of the really cheap price on the cage, so its up to you really.

Generally you need atleast 2 square feet per rat. Martins cages are great, but a bit pricey.
There is also an All Living Things cage at Petsmart in the small animal section. It is white, and about 2.5 feet high (I can't find it on there website).

One rat, at the most. I wouldn't even keep one in there, though that would be a great qtine/travel cage.
You and your rats are much better off investing more money in a cage that will last longer, instead of a cheap, crappy cage from a pet store.
You may want to look into making a cage yourself. Here are a few threads on different types of cages:

I believe that is a tank topper, so couldn't be used on it's own. It would fasten to a 10 gallon aquarium, so you'd need one of those too, as well as the topper. I belive that Martins sells a 20gallon topper? Some people report that urine tends to run down the outside of the tank using those, but they're probably better for the rat space and ventilation wise than tanks. Also, I can't see clearly but it does look like it's galvanised rather than powdercoated, so the wire may well start to absorb urine smells after a while.
A 10 gallon tank (20" x 10" x 12") plus a topper (21.5" x 11.75" x 18") would give you 4 cubic foot of space - just enough for 2 rats based on the usual minimum recommendations.

Yeah, it's a 10 gallon tank topper. My friend suggested it, since she has one for her own rat.
